Asbestos Concerns?

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Asbestos? Questions? Call SERVPRO of Duluth at 770-622-9411.

Asbestos was widely used in homes between the 1940s and 1970s. It is in insulation materials, floor tiles and other applications needing heat- and chemical-resistance materials. Asbestos is highly hazardous material and poses a great potential health risk for those exposed to the substance. While harmful asbestos materials are no longer used, exposures may still exist in older buildings and structures slated for demolition or renovation.

The Environmental Protection Agency has rules governing asbestos management that cover proper handling and disposal of asbestos-containing material. Adequate training and certification for asbestos workers, including inspectors, are part of these requirements.

SERVPRO of Duluth offers asbestos inspection and testing services. We have certified professionals to do asbestos abatement in accordance with AHERA and NESHAP protocols.

We are prepared to clean and disinfect your home or business, according to protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We have years of experience in dealing with biological contaminants, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform daily.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities. Disinfectants with fogging uses are great for getting into hard to reach areas in facilities to provide additional disinfecting power.

SERVPRO has branded itself over many years as the Leader in our industry. That brand has always been we are “Here to Help!”

SERVPRO of Duluth is taking this opportunity to do just that. The coronavirus has become a pandemic and is most likely affecting everyone in ways we could never imagine possible. Right now, “you simply must exercise caution.” Sounds like a lot using the word must, yet caution is extremely effective in times like this. It’s very important that you know and follow the CDC’s recommendations at home and at work. Please use the links to the CDC’s website at the bottom of this page for additional information on what measures you can be taking.

When considering proactive or enhanced cleaning, the CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, use this information to help educate yourself and please following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

First, We want to give you some critical definitions regarding what to look and listen for when you are seeking “professional”, proactive or enhanced cleaning services:

  • General surface cleaning – physically removes visible dirt, organic matter, viruses, fungi, and bacteria. General surface cleaning is accomplished with water, detergent, and physical scrubbing of the surface. The guiding principle is to remove microbes if possible, rather than kill them (with a sanitizer or disinfectant). In addition, thoroughly cleaning a surface can reduce the need to disinfect because without the nutrients and moisture needed to survive and multiply, most microbes cannot live on a clean and dry surface for very long.
  • Sanitizing – reduces but does not necessarily eliminate all the bacteria on a treated surface. Sanitizers do not have claims for viruses or fungi. To be a registered sanitizer, the test results for a product must show a reduction of at least 99.9% in the number of each type of bacteria tested on non-food-contact surfaces. Examples of non-food-contact sanitizers include carpet sanitizers, air sanitizers, laundry additives, and in-tank toilet bowl sanitizers.
  • Disinfecting – works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. Disinfecting destroys or irreversibly inactivates infectious or other undesirable microbes, but not necessarily the spores of bacteria and fungi. The number of microbes killed during a disinfecting process will vary, depending on the specific chemical and how it is used. An additional piece of information that is very important, especially if you are considering one of the above types of cleaning, what is actually taking place is “cleaning and applying disinfectants.” The key to cleaning is the proper removal of fungi, bacteria, viruses. If someone is claiming they are disinfecting, sterilizing, or sanitizing your space, surfaces, or areas, that is not the case with this virus. Again, it is “cleaning and applying…” as of yet, there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus.

We are “Here to Help” whether it includes providing you with these services as the Leader in this industry or simply informational. We hope that this will be helpful and encouraging for you, your family, or your business. Please view the links below to get up-to-date information from the CDC and other authorities.

Servpro of Duluth, mold on bricks Excess water and flooding can lead to mold damage both inside and outside of your home.

In Georgia, homes are made of some of the best building materials in the country, but mold damage can still happen. Mold can occur everywhere, and this means mold damage can happen inside and outside of your home. It can be in areas that you might not have considered.

Decorative brick on the exterior areas of your home, including those in walkways and patios, can become infused with mold. Care must be taken to clean these areas well so that mold spores are not spread. Even though they are located outside, it is important to contain as much of the mold and spores as possible.

It is very important that this is cleaned up outside as mold is easily carried indoors by both people and pets. Once inside, mold can find itself deposited into pet beds and tucked away under beds and inside closets. All these locations are perfect breeding grounds for mold.

Basic Rules to Follow When Filing a Homeowners Claim.

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Claim Call SERVPRO of Duluth before you call to file a claim (770) 622-9411.

Many people don't know the steps into filing a claim and how it could affect them. When a disaster hits, some people first reaction is to call their insurance agent to file a claim or either file a claim on their app. Sometimes their deductible may higher than the damage itself. It is best to get an estimate from a restoration company like SERVPRO of Duluth before you call to file a claim.

Here are some basic rules to follow when filing a claim:

  • Check with your agent or assigned adjuster to verify you’re covered for the claim.
  • After heavy rains and hurricanes, many homeowners think they have flood insurance. Traditional homeowner’s insurance does not cover water damage caused by floods. It is a separate coverage underwritten by the federal government through the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • If you file a claim with your insurance company for something that isn’t covered, the claim itself doesn’t go away from your record.
  • If you’re a consistent claimant, your rates are going to be high. It isn’t unusual for a homeowner to file up to two claims in a 10-year period, but more than one or two in a three-year time span and the insurance company will think you’re a high risk.
  • Don’t submit claims if it's something to deal with home-maintenance. (small incidents) Also, a better maintained home gets better premiums.
  • Call a restoration company like SERVPRO of Duluth to provide free assessment on your damages. They will let you know if the damage is less or more than your deductible. Based on their estimates, you can decide whether to file a claim.

Understanding Mold!

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Mold Problem? If you are looking for a MOLD inspection, call us at 770-622-9411.

When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture.

Many types of molds exist. All molds have the potential to cause serious health effects. Others are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors. The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic! Applying the appropriate restoration procedures within the first few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage. Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration.

In a standard situation, SERVPRO of Duluth Professionals examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area back to normal levels.

Call us, SERVPRO of Duluth at 770-622-9411, for more information.
