The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities. Disinfectants with fogging uses are great for getting into hard to reach areas in facilities to provide additional disinfecting power.

Before a Thunderstorm

Limit electric contact in and around your home by:

  • Unplug all appliances before the storm hits to prevent power surges.
  • Close all blinds and shades.

During a Thunderstorm

Once a storm has started, there are additional safety measures to take.

  • Stay away from windows.
  • Avoid phone use - telephone lines can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from faucets, sinks and bathtubs.
  • Stay away from water if you're stuck outside. Get inside or in a car.
  • Keep the windows shut if you're in a car. Pull to the side of the road to wait until the heavy rain subsides. Keep away from trees that could fall on your car.
  • Find a place outside that is unlikely to flood, if you can't find shelter. Avoid tall structures such as towers, trees, fences, telephone lines and power lines.

After a thunderstorm

  • Check Your Home for Damage
  • Review and Assess the Damage
  • Contact Your Insurance Provider
  • Avoid Additional Damage Where Possible

Reasons Why it is Vital to use Fire Cleaning Professionals

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Servpro of Duluth (770) 622-9411. Call the Fire Cleaning Professionals: (770) 622-9411.

Fires can happen unexpectedly at any time. Some people are unprepared on what to do for the clean up after the fire occurs, which is why it is vital to hire fire damage servicing company to help get it done correctly.

  • There are four main reasons on why it is vital to hire a fire damage service professional.
  • Unforeseen damages – With the unforeseen damages in the home, it is a possibility that it is no longer safe to live in.
  • Smoke and soot. – Soot can cover a lot of things in the home and it is very difficult to remove. Smoke has a bad tendency to linger for years and many people don’t realize it’s there. There are many places that smoke can get into besides the obvious like the carpet and furniture. It can be in the walls or air ducts. This sometimes makes the air in the home unhealthy to breathe, especially for children and elderly.
  • Right equipment – Many people may try to clean the damages themselves but don’t have the right equipment to do so. Hiring a cleanup service will allow the homeowners to save time and assurance that the home is well taken care of.
  • Structural damage – There can be structural damage from fire or the water used to put out the fire.  It can lead to big problems in the future if it is not taken care of immediately.

Don’t delay the cleanup process, the sooner the cleanup gets started, the less damage repair will need to be done.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact SERVPRO of Duluth (770) 622-9411.

Servpro of Duluth (770) 622-9411. SERVPRO of Duluth is Here to Help. Call us 24/7 - 770-622-9411

SERVPRO has branded itself over many years as the Leader in our industry. That brand has always been we are “Here to Help!”

SERVPRO of Duluth is taking this opportunity to do just that. The coronavirus has become a pandemic and is most likely affecting everyone in ways we could never imagine possible. Right now, “you simply must exercise caution.” Sounds like a lot using the word must, yet caution is extremely effective in times like this. It’s very important that you know and follow the CDC’s recommendations at home and at work. Please use the links to the CDC’s website at the bottom of this page for additional information on what measures you can be taking.

When considering proactive or enhanced cleaning, the CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, use this information to help educate yourself and please following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

First, We want to give you some critical definitions regarding what to look and listen for when you are seeking “professional”, proactive or enhanced cleaning services:

  • General surface cleaning – physically removes visible dirt, organic matter, viruses, fungi, and bacteria. General surface cleaning is accomplished with water, detergent, and physical scrubbing of the surface. The guiding principle is to remove microbes if possible, rather than kill them (with a sanitizer or disinfectant). In addition, thoroughly cleaning a surface can reduce the need to disinfect because without the nutrients and moisture needed to survive and multiply, most microbes cannot live on a clean and dry surface for very long.
  • Sanitizing – reduces but does not necessarily eliminate all the bacteria on a treated surface. Sanitizers do not have claims for viruses or fungi. To be a registered sanitizer, the test results for a product must show a reduction of at least 99.9% in the number of each type of bacteria tested on non-food-contact surfaces. Examples of non-food-contact sanitizers include carpet sanitizers, air sanitizers, laundry additives, and in-tank toilet bowl sanitizers.
  • Disinfecting – works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. Disinfecting destroys or irreversibly inactivates infectious or other undesirable microbes, but not necessarily the spores of bacteria and fungi. The number of microbes killed during a disinfecting process will vary, depending on the specific chemical and how it is used. An additional piece of information that is very important, especially if you are considering one of the above types of cleaning, what is actually taking place is “cleaning and applying disinfectants.” The key to cleaning is the proper removal of fungi, bacteria, viruses. If someone is claiming they are disinfecting, sterilizing, or sanitizing your space, surfaces, or areas, that is not the case with this virus. Again, it is “cleaning and applying…” as of yet, there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus.

We are “Here to Help” whether it includes providing you with these services as the Leader in this industry or simply informational. We hope that this will be helpful and encouraging for you, your family, or your business. Please view the links below to get up-to-date information from the CDC and other authorities.

Principles of Cleaning Smoke-Damaged Materials!

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Servpro of Duluth employee and customer If you are dealing with fire damage in your property, call SERVPRO of Duluth (770) 622-9411.

SERVPRO of Duluth Principles of Cleaning

When restoring smoke-damaged materials, the goal is to restore materials to preloss condition. SERVPRO of Duluth apply the following basic principles of cleaning to accomplish this task.

  1. Locate smoke residues by carefully inspecting the affected area. The inspection will start near the source of the fire and trace how far smoke moved through the structure.
  2. Identify the type of residues. Different types of smoke residues can exist in the same loss environment. SERVPRO of Duluth will select a cleaning method that will effectively remove the type of smoke residues present.
  3. Identify the type of surface. The type of surface determines which cleaning methods and products are safe to use on that surface. SERVPRO of Duluth are careful to preserve the material or surface being cleaned, and some materials may be un-restorable because they cannot withstand the cleaning process.
  4. Capture and remove residues. Smoke residues bond with surfaces they contact. SERVPRO of Duluth uses dry and wet cleaning processes to release and carry residue particles away from the affected surface.

Dispose of residues. SERVPRO of Duluth properly disposes of debris and cleaning waste.

5 Hurricane Categories

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

There are different types of hurricane categories.  It can’t predict everything about a storm, but categories do give an indication of how a hurricane will affect people and property in its path. Here are the different types of categories:

Category 1 hurricane

In a Category 1 hurricane, winds range from 74 to 95 mph.  It is very dangerous winds that will produce some damages. Such as falling debris that could strike people, livestock and pets, and older mobile homes. Protected glass windows will generally make it through the hurricane without major damage. Frame homes, apartments and shopping centers may experience some damage, and snapped power lines could result in short-term power outages.

Category 2 hurricane

In a Category 2 hurricane, winds range between 96 and 110 mph. It is extremely dangerous winds that will cause extensive damage. There is a bigger risk of injury or death to people, livestock and pets from flying debris. Older mobile homes will likely be destroyed. Frame homes, apartment buildings and shopping centers may see major roof and siding damage, and many trees will be uprooted. Residents should expect near total power loss after a Category 2 hurricane, with outages lasting anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Category 3 hurricane

In a Category 3 hurricane, winds range from 111 to 129 mph. Devastating damages will occur in a category 3.  There is a high risk of injury or death to people, livestock, and pets from flying and falling debris. Nearly all older mobile homes will be destroyed, and most new ones will experience significant damage. Even well-built frame homes, apartments and industrial buildings will likely experience major damage, and the storm will uproot many trees that may block roads. Electricity and water will likely be unavailable for several days to a few weeks after the storm.

Category 4 hurricane

In a Category 4 hurricane, winds range from 130 to 156 mph. Catastrophic damages will occur during a Category 4. At these speeds, falling and flying debris poses a very high risk of injury or death to people, pets and livestock. Again, most mobile homes will be destroyed, even newer ones. Some frame homes may totally collapse, while well-built homes will likely see severe damage to their roofs, and apartment buildings can experience damage to upper floors.

A Category 4 hurricane will blow out most windows on high-rise buildings, uproot most trees and will likely down many power lines. Power outages can last for weeks or even months after storms of this level. Water shortages are also common in the aftermath of Category 4 hurricanes, potentially making the affected area uninhabitable for weeks or months.

Category 5 hurricane

In a Category 5 hurricane, winds are 157 mph or higher. Category 5 hurricanes cause absolute devastation. Most buildings in its path are damaged or destroyed; trees are blown over, signs are destroyed, and power lines are knocked over.

A Category 5 hurricane is likely to uproot most trees and ruin most power poles. And like with Category 4 hurricanes, power outages will likely last for weeks to months. People should expect long-term water shortages

Winter is coming! Are you ready?

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Cold Weather! Call Us. We are here to help – (770) 622-9411.

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage.

While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared to help prevent costly damages due to weather.

Consider taking the following precautions to protect your home or business.

- Check your property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause injuries.

- Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall.

- Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.

- Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas.

- Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.

Hurricane Season is here.

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Hurricane Need help? Call SERVPRO of Duluth at 770-622-9411.

There are different types of hurricane categories.  It can’t predict everything about a storm, but categories do give an indication of how a hurricane will affect people and property in its path. Here are the different types of categories:

Category 1 hurricane: Winds range from 74 to 95 mph.

Category 2 hurricane: Winds range between 96 and 110 mph. It is extremely dangerous winds that will cause extensive damage. There is a bigger risk of injury or death to people, livestock, and pets from flying debris.

Category 3 hurricane: Winds range from 111 to 129 mph.

Category 4 hurricane: Winds range from 130 to 156 mph.

Category 5 hurricane: Winds are 157 mph or higher. People should expect long-term water shortages.

  4. Has it been more than 5 years since I have reviewed my homeowner’s policy?
  5. Are you covered for the actual cash value of your personal items, or do you have a replacement cost policy?

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Flooding in home. Basement Flooded? We’re Ready To Help (770) 622-9411.

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are several reasons why your Duluth basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

If flood water is not handled quickly and properly, it can jeopardize your health and safety, and cause severe damage to your home’s structure. The longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.

SERVPRO of Duluth has trained professional crews where they can handle the situation safely and correctly. We have earned the trust of hundreds of homeowners, business owners, and property professionals.

Basic Rules to Follow When Filing a Homeowners Claim.

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Claim Call SERVPRO of Duluth before you call to file a claim (770) 622-9411.

Many people don't know the steps into filing a claim and how it could affect them. When a disaster hits, some people first reaction is to call their insurance agent to file a claim or either file a claim on their app. Sometimes their deductible may higher than the damage itself. It is best to get an estimate from a restoration company like SERVPRO of Duluth before you call to file a claim.

Here are some basic rules to follow when filing a claim:

  • Check with your agent or assigned adjuster to verify you’re covered for the claim.
  • After heavy rains and hurricanes, many homeowners think they have flood insurance. Traditional homeowner’s insurance does not cover water damage caused by floods. It is a separate coverage underwritten by the federal government through the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • If you file a claim with your insurance company for something that isn’t covered, the claim itself doesn’t go away from your record.
  • If you’re a consistent claimant, your rates are going to be high. It isn’t unusual for a homeowner to file up to two claims in a 10-year period, but more than one or two in a three-year time span and the insurance company will think you’re a high risk.
  • Don’t submit claims if it's something to deal with home-maintenance. (small incidents) Also, a better maintained home gets better premiums.
  • Call a restoration company like SERVPRO of Duluth to provide free assessment on your damages. They will let you know if the damage is less or more than your deductible. Based on their estimates, you can decide whether to file a claim.

Understanding Mold!

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Mold Problem? If you are looking for a MOLD inspection, call us at 770-622-9411.

When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture.

Many types of molds exist. All molds have the potential to cause serious health effects. Others are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors. The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic! Applying the appropriate restoration procedures within the first few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage. Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration.

In a standard situation, SERVPRO of Duluth Professionals examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area back to normal levels.

Call us, SERVPRO of Duluth at 770-622-9411, for more information.

Ten Things You Should Know About Mold

9/19/2018 (Permalink)

mold on wall Mold

  • Mold is found everywhere, indoors and outdoors. It is part of the natural environment. It’s usually not a problem, unless it starts to grow indoors.
  • The best way to control indoor mold is to control the moisture
  • Molds produce and release millions of spores small enough to be air-, water-, or insect-borne.
  • Common indoor molds are:
    • Cladosporium
    • Penicillium
    • Alternaria
    • Aspergillus
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Reduce indoor humidity to decrease mold by:
    • Using de-humidifiers
    • Use the air vent in the bathrooms
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using the exhaust fans whenever cooking
  • Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold as soon as possible.
  • Clean and dry any damp materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  • Do not install carpeting in areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem such as basements, kitchen etc.
  • The best way to find mold is to look for signs of mold growth, water staining, warping, or to follow your nose to the source of the odor.

Spring Home Maintenance Tips

6/7/2018 (Permalink)

Gutter Cleaning

Spring has arrived, and it has welcomed us Georgians in a bipolar way. We are still not sure if we should keep are heaters around or put them up. It’s also that time of year to conduct some home maintenance that will help homeowners avoid big repair bills later on.

    • Inspect your roof; it is your home’s first line of defense against water damage.
    • Clean your gutters; it directs the rain away from your roof and home
    • Clean or replace HVAC filters; a dirty filter forces your heat, ventilation, and AC system to work harder.
    • Check the washing machine fill hose; sometimes a leaky hose under pressure can cause water damage in a short period of time.
    • Clean your dryer vent; a clean vent will help reduce the time your dryer has to run, while a plugged vent not only wastes money but could cause a house fire.
    • Replace the batteries on your smoke detectors; you never know when you will need them.

These tips may take a few days to complete but take it one step at a time and you’ll get them done.
